Maintain Your Ceramic
Do’s and Donts
-
Conduct regular car washes using a pH-neutral car wash soap and a two-bucket method to prevent cross-contamination. A gentle wash routine helps preserve the ceramic coating and removes contaminants without causing scratches.
-
Opt for soft, high-quality microfiber towels when drying your car. Pat the surface gently to minimize the risk of scratches and maintain the coating's glossy appearance.
-
Consider applying a ceramic coating booster or spray every few months to enhance hydrophobic properties. This not only adds an extra layer of protection but also revitalizes the coating's water-repelling capabilities.
-
Regularly inspect your vehicle for contaminants like bird droppings, bug splatter, or tree sap. Promptly remove these substances to prevent them from bonding to the coating and causing damage.
-
Schedule periodic inspections with a professional detailer to assess the condition of the ceramic coating. Professionals can identify any issues early on and recommend appropriate maintenance or reapplication.
-
Steer clear of abrasive materials such as rough towels, sponges, or brushes that can potentially scratch the ceramic coating. Stick to soft and gentle cleaning tools to preserve the coating's integrity.
-
Avoid automatic car washes that use abrasive brushes, as they can compromise the ceramic coating. Opt for touchless or handwashing methods to ensure gentle yet effective cleaning.
-
Refrain from applying wax on top of a ceramic coating, as it may not adhere well and could diminish the coating's hydrophobic properties. The ceramic coating alone provides durable protection and a glossy finish.
-
Don't allow contaminants like bird droppings or bug splatter to sit on the car's surface for an extended period. Prompt removal is crucial to prevent potential damage to the ceramic coating.
-
When using a pressure washer, avoid applying high pressure too close to the car's surface. Use a wide spray pattern and maintain a safe distance to prevent any compromise to the ceramic coating.
FAQs:
-
A ceramic coating is a liquid polymer applied to the exterior surfaces of a vehicle. It chemically bonds with the factory paint, creating a protective layer. It enhances the paint's gloss, adds hydrophobic properties, and provides protection against various environmental contaminants.
-
The durability of ceramic coatings varies, but they typically last between 2 to 5 years, depending on the quality of the product, application process, and maintenance. High-quality coatings with proper care may even exceed these estimates.
-
Generally, for most daily driven cars, we recommend bringing it in for a quarterly inspection every three(3) months to ensure the coating is performing as expected and touch up any spots that seem to be taking a toll. If your vehicle is rarely driven or garage-kept, this upkeep can be prolonged to a bi-annual inspection.
-
While some enthusiasts apply ceramic coatings, achieving optimal results requires professional expertise. Professional detailers are trained to ensure proper surface preparation and application, maximizing the coating's effectiveness.
-
No, ceramic coatings are not scratch-proof but provide a sacrificial layer that can help resist light scratches and swirl marks. However, they won't prevent all types of scratches, and proper care is essential to minimize the risk of damage.
-
Applying wax on top of a ceramic coating is usually unnecessary. The ceramic coating provides durable protection and a glossy finish. Waxing may not adhere well to the coating and could diminish its hydrophobic properties.
-
While many ceramic coatings can withstand automatic car washes, it's advisable to choose touchless options to avoid potential damage from abrasive brushes or harsh chemicals. Hand washing or using a pressure washer is generally a safer choice.
-
Curing times vary among products, but most coatings generally require 24 to 72 hours to cure fully. We always recommend treating a fresh coating as if it’s fresh paint and suggest waiting up to 7 days to really ensure the ceramic has hardened all the way through. During this time, it's crucial to keep the vehicle dry and avoid exposure to rain or other environmental factors.
-
Yes, ceramic coatings can be applied to various surfaces, including glass, wheels, and plastic trim, though durability will vary based on the coatings environment. Regardless, this offers protection and ease of maintenance for these surfaces, enhancing the vehicle's overall appearance.
-
While a ceramic coating reduces the frequency of washing and makes cleaning easier, regular maintenance is still essential. Promptly removing contaminants like bird droppings and bug splatter helps preserve the coating's effectiveness over time.
